Podiatry on the NHS

Podiatry and chiropody are available on the NHS free of charge in most areas of the UK. The availability of podiatry treatment in your local area will depend on your Primary Care Trust (PCT). Each case is also assessed on an individual basis. Whether or not you receive free NHS podiatry treatment will depend on how serious your condition is and how quickly it needs to be treated. If your condition is unlikely to affect your health, or mobility, you may not be eligible for treatment. If you are not eligible for NHS podiatry treatment you may wish to consult a private podiatrist. To find out whether or not you are eligible for NHS podiatry treatment you will need to see your GP.

People with diabetes

Diabetes can have very serious harmful effects on the feet, ankles and lower limbs. If you have diabetes it is vital that you regularly visit a podiatrist. Most people with diabetes who need to see a podiatris or chiropodist are treated as priority cases, although some PCTs will only prioritise people if their diabetes is severe. Your PCT will be able to provide you with more information about their referral policies.

The best place to look for a private podiatrist in your area is The Society of Chiropodists and Podiatrists webiste.

The Society of Chiropodists and Podiatrists represents over 10,000 practising members, all registered by the Health & Care Professions Council.

A word of caution
Only the titles podiatrist and chiropodist are protected by law. Other foot related titles are unregulated by the Health & Care Professions Council (HCPC). Attending an HCPC registered chiropodist or podiatrist helps ensure safety and proficiency.

Health & Care Professions Council (HCPC) are a regulator, and were set up to protect the public. To do this, the HCPC keep a register of health & care professionals who meet their standards for their training, professional skills, behaviour and health. The HCPC currently register over 180,000 professionals from 13 professions.
